Surrounded by temperate forests and situated at an altitude around 6,000 feet (1,829 meter) above sea level, the accommodation facilities inside the Kinabalu Park are some of the best that one can find at this holiday resort. These accommodations consist of chalets, cabins, as well as dormitories. Guests who stay at the park also have easy access to the other park facilities like restaurants, exhibition centre, nature trails and the botanic garden. Lately bird watching is also a popular activity at the park.
The Kinabalu Park was established in 1964. Accommodation at the park was started with just two chalets and a dormitory (Grace Hostel). The two chalets were located right at the entrance of the park. Staying in here was managed by the Sabah Park at that time. Today the two chalets at the entrance have turned into office buildings which include the reception and lobby. As more people visited the park and with better road connection in the 70s, a few more chalets (Kinabalu Lodge, Garden Lodge, Summit Lodge, and Peak Lodges) were built. By the mid-80s the cabins (Hill Lodge) and another dormitory building (Rock Hostel) were ready. Eventually the beautiful lodges (Nepenthes and Rajah Lodge) beside the cabins were also completed in the early 90s.
Since the year 2000 the accommodation facilities at Kinabalu Park is managed by the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. All the rooms and chalets have gone upscale and the whole place had a serious make-over since the change of management, a big improvement from the early days. Today the chalets and cabins have a modern setting and well thought of designs to match. A special feature that many guests are looking for is the fire place, and most of the park chalets and lodges have one. With the wonderful cold weather, and the peaceful surrounding of the park, plus the magnificient view of Mount Kinabalu, staying at the Kinabalu Park will surely bring back many fond memories.
