Popular Eateries in Downtown KK

Of late Kota Kinabalu (KK) not only attracts thousands of travellers to its shore daily for its natural wonders, but many of these visitors also find the local foods very tempting. Today it is not uncommon to see tourists with a map on hand to look for these popular eateries in downtown KK, some of them even go hopping from one eatery to another, in search of that perfect taste. Most of these eateries only concentrate at one or two particular hawker style foods. And these are not the big restaurants that specialise in certain cuisine. The food pricing here is from budget to moderate, surely every one can afford to try some of them if not all. These popular eateries are in downtown KK, will be introduced street by street (below).

Gaya Street
Let’s start with the oldest street in KK, the famous Gaya Street which was known as Bond Street during the colonial era. Every Sunday this street will be closed for traffic where the Gaya Street Sunday Market will be held. Here many of the local traders will come and sell their produces and products.

Kedai Kopi Yee Fung
Being reviewed in many magazines over and over again, Kedai Kopi Yee Fung has been cooking its delicious laksa for the last three decades. The ingredients in the laksa are prawns, chicken shreds, slices of fried eggs, small dried tofu, and the distinctive and tantalizing laksa soup which is blended with coconut milk. Apart from the laksa, Yee Fung Kopitiam also serves beef noodle and the claypot chicken rice. The kopitiam was recently renovated, and now it is decorated with many sets of classic marble tables and crafty wooden stools.

Syarikat Yu Kee
Bak Kut Teh is a unique food created out of necessity by the Stairts of Malacca Chinese labourers of yesteryear, for the energetic nutrition from the lard for these hard working people. Through many years of innovation and changes today Bak Kut Teh has become a very popular dish among the Chinese community. Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh is influenced by the Hokkien clan where the soup is boiled with strong herbs, which can be tasted easily. Other dishes where the customers get to select are the ribs, lean meat, intestine, liver, stomach, tongue, pig ear, mushroom, and tofu. Do come early during dinner time because the place can be very crowded.

Fook Yuen Cafe & Bakery
One of the local delicacies during the colonial era specially during tea times, is toast bread spread with butter and kaya. Kaya is a kind of local coconut jam. At time the toast bread is served together with a half-boiled egg. While many kopitiams in KK serves this local sandwich, Fook Yuen is one of the most popular, and is very much favoured by the locals. Apart from the toast bread, Fook Yuen also serves budget meals, where a wide varieties of foods can be selected from fried noodle, fried rice, fish cake, sausages, stuffed tofu, stuffed egg plant, stuffed bitter gourd, meat balls, dim sum and many more. The milk tea of Fook Yuen is also very much sought after.

Beach Street
Beach Street was most likely started in the early 1930s. During that time the beach was along this street, although the beach has long gone, this street is a good guide line for people to know that the land beyond this street are all reclaimed lands.

Kedai Kopi Melanian 3
Melanian Kopitiam specialises in one dish only and that is the mixed pork noodle. A bowl of mixed pork noodle soup normally comes with sliced pork, intestine, liver, stomach, and meat balls. The hot soup tastes mild and sweet at the same time. The open secret for the tasty ingredients are their freshness. One can also order dry noodle which the locals called kon lou, where the noodle is stirred and mixed with sweet dark sauce. For side-dish Melanian also serves equally mouth-watering stuffed tofu, and marinated chicken feet. Rumours have it that a branch was opened in Singapore recently.

Sin Kee Bah Kut Teh
It just seems like KK Lites just can’t get enough of Bah Kut Teh. Here the Bak Kut Teh dishes are served in a clay pot, which is burnt with strong fire. The soup here is of the Teo Chew clan style which has a milder herbal taste. Customers get to select ingredients like ribs, slim meat, intestine, liver, stomach, tongue, pig ear, mushroom, and tofu to go with the sweet herbal soup. Customers can also order these ingredients separately.

Kedai Kopi Fatt Kee
For a budget Chinese cuisine, Fatt Kee kopitiam situated at the ground floor of Ang's Hotel is definitely the place to be. Here customers can sample many different types of Chinese cooking like sweet and sour dishes, simple stirred-fried meat with ginger and spring onion, sizzling hot plate, steamed, and so on. Popular dishes where one can order here are the lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork chop, beef with broccoli, steamed fish, mushroom with oyster sauce, and many more. The fried noodle here whether dry or wet are equally tasty. This shop is rather small with only about ten tables, so customers are advised to be a little patient especially during lunch and dinner times.

Tun Razak Street
Tun Razak Street, which named after the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, is the longest street in KK. It links the Coastal Highway and the Likas Bay Coastal Highway. Many KK shopping malls are found along this street, namely the Centre Point Shopping Mall, Wisma Merdeka Shopping Centre, and the latest addition the premier Suria Sabah.

Wiya Chicken Rice and kopitiam
Located at the Segama Shoplots next to Tun Razak Street, Wiya is famed for its Hainan Ckicken Rice. This shop has been here since 1978. The chicken here tastes different from the other chicken outlets is that the chickens are steamed instead of roasted or deep fried. Apart from chicken rice, Wiya also serves BBQ pork and roasted pork rice. Noodle in soup or dry are also available. For side dishes there are dim sum, fried bean sprout, and other vegetable dishes.

Kuo Man Noodle
Kuo Man is well known for its noodle which is home made. The noodle here is not only tasty but also springy. Customers can order their noodle in soup or kon lou. Kon Lou is a local method where the noodle is stirred and mixed with sweet dark sauce, similar to spaghetti pasta but with a different kind of sauce. Customers get to choose from a wide varieties of ingredients to go with their noodle. These ingredients include sliced beef, stewed beef, marinated mixed cow internal parts, sliced fish, prawn and chicken. Kou Man stall is located on the fourth floor at the Suria Sabah food court. The mother restaurant is located at the Sunny Garden Shoplots at mile three Tuaran Road.

Laiman Diki Street
Laiman Diki street is located at the Kampung Air area. The popular Taman Seri Selera where many of the seafood restaurants are concentrated is also situated along this street.

Sri Melaka Restaurant
A good place to enjoy tasty Nyonya fusion food, a mixture of Chinese and Malay cuisines, is the Sri Melaka restaurant located at Kampung Air. This unique style of cooking is made popular by the Baba Nyonya people of Malacca. Some of the must try dishes here are the beef rendang, assam or curry fish head, sambal prawn and belacan kang kung (local vegetable). This restaurant does not serve pork. The interior of Sri Melaka restaurant consisting of two floors is slightly up scale, it is equipped with air-conditioners and posh table setting. During lunch and dinner the restaurant is frequently visited by tour groups.
