Mt. Kinabalu is one of the Sabah premier tourist destinations, and during local school holidays and public holidays, many of the accommodations are always packed to its limit. Many locals would escape from the warm and humid condition of the hot tropical lowland, to enjoy a cooling and peaceful atmosphere around the highland regions surrounding Mt. Kinabalu. Consider as a mid-range accommodation, Kinabalu Rose Cabin was established more than a decade ago. It has a total of 27 rooms which are divided into three types: Hibiscus, Clivia, and Rafflesia. These rooms are not five-star but they are clean and comfortable. The Rafflesia Room can sleep 16 persons. It is also well poised for climbers who are planning for an assault at the summit, since it is located less than 2km from the Kinabalu Park registration office. One must registered with the Sabah Park authority before permits are issued for the climbing of Mt. Kinabalu.
Kinabalu Rose Cabin is made of three buildings that link together to form a long stretch. The first building consists of the reception office, lobby, and restaurant on the ground floor, and on the first floor is the Hibiscus rooms. The second building is a long wooden stucture which house the Clivia rooms, and has two levels. The third building is actually a two levels chalet, this is where the Rafflesia rooms are located, it is more like a big family room with many bunk beds. All rooms do not have cooking facility. The land at the back of Kinabalu Rose Cabin is a nursery and farmland.
|Room Type||Sunday to Friday||Saturday, Eve, and Public Holiday|
|Hibiscus Room||RM 70||RM 100|
|Clivia Room||RM 130||RM 160|
|Rafflesia Room||RM 200||RM 250|
The restaurant at Kinabalu Rose Cabin services a selection of local and Chinese cuisines. Its local dishes of beef redang, prawn sambal and chicken curry are a few good example for sampling for international guests. (Author's note: I love eating at this restaurant, especially the fusion dishes, a mixed of Chinese and Malay cooking styles.) The Kinabalu view at the back of Kinabalu Rose Cabin is also breath taking, it is one of the few cabins that have view so close to Mt. Kinabalu. The Layang-Layang Station and Laban Rata are visible on a cloudless day.
All in all Kinabalu Rose Cabin has good and comfortable rooms with reasonable price, clean and quality restaurant, near proximity to Kinabalu Park, and a super view of Mt. Kinabalu.
How to go there? Drive along the Kota Kinabalu- Ranau road for about 90km towards Kinabalu Park Headquarters. Upon reaching Kinabalu Park Headquarters, Kinabalu Rose Cabin is just some 2 km away on the left hand side of the road. If one travel from the other direction Kinabalu Rose Cabin is about 4 km away from Kundasang town.
