The Sabah Museum Complex is located on a small hill called the Old Place Hill (Bukit Istana Lama), below the foothill lies the Sembulan river and with the Sabah State government administration complex on the other side of the river. The Old Palace Hill has a magnificent look on the surrounding areas with Queen Elizabeth Hospital on one side, while the State Mosque, Sutera Harbour and the South China Sea on the other side. In this area of 43.3 acres of lush green forest, the Sabah Museum Complex consists of the Museum Proper, Science and Education Centre, ethnobotanic garden, zoological garden and the Heritage Village.

The Sabah Museum main building is easily recognizable with its unique shape roof top, which is designed after a traditional Rungus Longhouse. The Museum Proper houses a few collection of ceramics, artifacts and Sabah’s history. The entrance to the Museum Proper is displayed with a 50 feet long Bryde’s whale’s skeletons, which met its misfortune at the shallow sea of Gaya Island a few years back. The Time Tunnel is a show case of Sabah prehistorical times to the more recent history right after Sabah joined the Malay Federation. Before 1900 most of the local history is in written form, and from the twenty century onwards the history comes alive with many black and white pictures.

Tanjung Aru area is probably one of the oldest suburbs of Kota Kinabalu. Lies just 10 minutes away on foot from the Terminal 2, the old International Airport of Kota Kinabalu. Tanjung Aru used to be a trendy township. During the colonial time this was where the British Crown housed their civil servants. Today these housing has been demolished for new development, and just a few of these houses survived, which would be good for historical conservation. Tanjung Aru township consists of a post office, a police station, a small market in the centre and a few blocks of shoplots. This is also where the popular Daily Express newspaper printing factory is located. More than a dozen eateries operate at Tanjung Aru, which cater for the many government and private offices around this area.

Of all these kopitiams at Tanjuna Aru township, Wah Juan Kopitiam would no doubt be the most popular. Wah Juan Kopitiam opens day and night, but what people come for, especially KK Lites, is the pork mixed noodle. This tasty mouth watering pork mixed noodle is only available in the morning, from 7 am to 11 am. At times one must be prepared to wait for a table, which can take up to almost half an hour long, but the faithful customers are always seen patiently happy waiting for their table.

Tun Fuad Stephens Park (Bukit Padang)

August 11, 2008 By: olombon Category: Kota Kinabalu, Western

For the last few centuries, many of us have chosen to live in the city instead of staying at the country side. As more and more cities are built, millions upon millions of human beings are coming for the vibrant life that these cities have to offer. Yet at times we miss the beautiful nature of the country side like hills, lakes, forests, trees, plants, flowers, and birds which are all very dear to us. No wonder cities all around the world build parks to keep us in touch with nature. Today a stroll in the park is going to do our hearts wonder. The trees give us clean oxygen, flowers make us happy, birds and insects sing to us, and not forgetting the exercise we gained by walking around the park.

Although not mentioned in most of the travelling guide books, one of Kota Kinabalu best kept secrets is Tun Fuad Stephens Park (Bukit Padang). Located about 15 minutes away by car from the city centre, Tun Fuad Stephens Park is the only park in Kota Kinabalu that has a lake, which is surrounded by hills on three sides except at the front entrance. The lake was a reservoir (for drinking water) in the old days, and the park was only built in the late 70s.
