The important of Kundasang to Sabah, is like Cameron Highland to West Malaysia. Although Kundasang Town consists of just two dozens of shop lots, but Kundasang boasts one of the highest concentration of farming community in Sabah. Kundasang is about 6 kilometres from the Kinabalu Park Headquaters.
With altitude ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 metres above sea level, Kundasang has a temperate climate, which makes this valley an ideal place to plant temperate vegetables. Popular vegetables like carrot, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, pepper bell, spring onion, and even mushroom are planted here. These vegetables not only are sold to the markets in Kota Kinabalu, like Kota Kinabalu Centre Markets, theses vegetables are exported to as far as Brunei and Sarawak.
Travellers to Poring Hot Spring will not miss the two rows of stores, about 100 metre in length, along the Kundasang-Ranau Highway. Many small independent traders can be seen selling vegetables that were harvested from the farmland near by. Others than vegetables, colourful flowers planted by the surrounding nurseries are also on sale.
Because of Kundasang proximity to Mt. Kinabalu, or more correctly put, Kundasang is right at the foothill of Mt. Kinabalu, this area offers stunning view to the magnificent and mystical mountain. On a cloudless day, the many peaks of Kinabalu can be clearly seen. Most afternoon Mt. Kinabalu can be seen playing hide and seek with the rising white clouds, gently drifting across the rocky mountain.
With Mt. kinabalu as the prominent view, and a colder weather compare with other part of Sabah, Kundasang offers a cold and relaxing place to stay overnight. Resorts, hotels, chalets, and rest houses are plenty to choose from the surround hills. Few notable accommodations are the Mt. Kinabalu Heritage Resort & Spa, Kinabalu Pine Resort, and the Mesilau Nature Resort. Many local entrepreneurs have also set up numerous chalets, like Philip Garden Chalets to cater for the ever increasing guest. During school holidays and long public holidays accommodations at Kundasang is normally at full capacity.
The Kundasang Golf Course is reckoned to be the world highest golf course. With 18 holes golf course at such a high altitude, the course offers a completely new kind of challenge for the golfers. Interesting places to explore around Kundasang area are Kundasang War Memorial, Kinabalu Park HQ, Poring Hot Spring, and Sabah Tea Plantation.
For those who want a more flexible time table, Taxi and many tour agents are a good option. Taxi can be chartered for a full day to Kinabalu Park HQ and Poring Hot spring while passing Kundasang for a price of RM 380.00.
For those who like to drive there on their own, rental of car is available in Kota Kinabalu. Navigation through the twisting and winding road to Kinabalu Park HQ is easy, as the road sign is well placed. Price of rental car, Kenari a locally manufacture car, is about RM 140 per day.
