A View from the Tip Of Borneo

A three hours drive through picturesque padi fields and lush green forests toward the north of Kota Kinabalu, will inevitably lead one to the Tip Of Borneo, which is about 40 kilometres from Kudat. Ever since the road to the Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, the local named for Tip of Borneo, was sealed a few years back, and proper facilities like car park, cafeteria, and toilet are in place, this wilderness headland at the northwestern most tip of Borneo island has become a very popular spot for both locals and tourists alike.

From the car park a small clay paver road, dotted with many Rungus’ motifs, leads to the promontory, which is decorated by a truncated globe monument and a flagpole. The truncated globe monument seems like an eye-catching point for many visitors, as many of them are seen happily queuing up to take photos with the shorten globe for remembrance.

Located along Jalan Tuaran and about one and half mile away from Kota Kinabalu, Kedai Restoran Kuo Man is no doubt one of Kota Kinabalu best noodle houses. Established more than 30 years ago, this little shop at Sunny Garden has been the talk of town for years for it’s wonderful home made noodle.

Every day during breakfast and lunch time, these faithful clients of Kuo Man always jam packed the ground and first floor of this little intermediate shop. Other than the famous home made noodles, many customers also come for Kou Man’s tasty minced fish slices and the mouth watering beef triplets.

Sabah, also known as The Land Below The Wind, is the northern most state of Malaysia. Situated at the northern part of the Borneo Island, two third of Sabah’s border is made up of coastal land. The west coast of Sabah is washed by the waters of South China Sea, and the north-Sulu Sea and while the east coast-the Celebes Sea.

With its unique geographical location and the many islands surrounding Sabah, corals and a vast ecosystem of wetlands have enriched it surrounding with abundant of marine life. With all this natural element in place, fishermen in Sabah are constantly supplying the local markets with plenty of fresh seafood.

Sabah most visited destination has to be Mt. Kinabalu, since becoming Malaysia’s first world heritage site in the year 2001, many people around the world have climbed to the summit of Mt. Kinabalu, at 4093 metre. No climbing experience is needed to scale this mountain, just an average fitness will do. Watching sunrise at Low Peak, the highest point of Mt. Kinabalu, has been an unforgetable experience for the climbers.

All the peaks of Mt. Kinabalu is scalable, but a special permit must be obtained from the Sabah Park, before one is allowed to scale these peaks, other than Low’s Peak. On the journey to the summit, climbers will come across a few peaks, like South Peak, St. John Peak, Ugly Sisters Peak and Donkey Ears Peak. Some of these peaks are notable for their shapes and some are just plain ordinary.

Low’s Peak (4,093 m) is the highest point of Mt. Kinabalu, and this is where climbers come to see the beautiful sunrise and the enchanting surrounding scenery. On the summmit, Low’s Peak, one can see as far as the landscape allow, and the Tip of Borneo is visible on a clear day, so are the many islands just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu.
